Dash 940C

Norfolk Southern 940-C

Visual Identification: The unit is very similar in appearance to the Dash 8. However, the Hi-Adhesion trucks are a dead giveaway that this unit is more advanced.

Trivials:- Norfolk Southern, the ever conservative railroad that it is, was the only railroad to order the 4,000Hp version of this unit. The first part of their order was for Spartan Cab units (125), the last that were ordered by American railroads. Another 1,089 units were ordered with the wide cab.

- For the first time since it began building diesel locomotives, General Electric did not offer a four axle version of the Dash 9, making the Dash 840-B the last GE B-B units.

- Though popular, these units were made obsolete by new EPA tiered regulations designed to reduce pollution from railroad locomotives. The Dash Series locomotives were replaced by the Evolution Series.
